Ask Terry Questions Federal Student Loan Debt Relief Program

Federal Student Loan Debt Relief Program

By Terry Savage on May 20, 2023 | College Savings / Student Loans

Do you have any updated information on the one-time Student Loan Debt Relief plan that is held up by lawsuits that were filed? Is it still going to happen or is there any other news regarding if it will be allowed or not? When are we supposed to hear about the decision by the courts or whoever is dealing with this? Thank you.

Terry Says

We expect a Supreme Court ruling on the challenge to the Biden student loan forgiveness plan sometime this spring. Federal student loan payments are set to resume 60 days after the Supreme Court reaches a decision on student loan forgiveness. If the court does not come to a resolution by the end of its current term, on June 30, payments will resume 60 days from that date. So at the very latest, payments will start again in late August.
