Garnished wages due to student loan default

By Terry Savage on August 05, 2018 | College Savings / Student Loans

My wages have been garnished for 3 1/2 years now, due to a defaulted student loan…Who can I contact to get any numbers regarding the balances at this time? Are the garnished amounts even paying off the balance, or not even covering the interest? I was the Doorman at the Omni Hotel from 2003 through 2006, and I had many interactions with you at that time. Hoping to hear back from you regarding my situation… Thank you..

Oh, this is a terrible story and I am posting it as a warning to others that this can happen. I am quite sure that these are PRIVATE (not Federal) student loans, as they wouldn’t start garnishing your wages this quickly. And I wish you had contacted me earlier.
The first step is to determine the loans you have outstanding. Go to www.NSLDS.ed.gov, which is the National Student Loan Database, and should have a record of all student loans outstanding.
If these are private student loans, who is the servicing agent — likely Navient. Here is a link to the phone numbers of all the student loan servicing companies. Call the one to whom you are paying and have your account numbers handy. You’ll have to be persistent to get the balances, since your account is in “collection.”

If you run into a dead end, send me an email to Terry@TerrySavage.com, with a list of your loans, collection agency notices, and some contact info to reach you. I will try to help you out since I know you!!
