Get Married to avoid IRMAA Premiums?
I’m a Cook Co. retiree that does not qualify for Social Security (never contributed). I’ve always paid $599.00 plus part B,( last year $679.80 p/m. In 2023 my pension and investment income exceeded $103K and I got my IRMAA letter last month. New amount for 2025, $923 p/m. 😣 It looks like I may exceed $135 K this year👏 Question: My girlfriend qualifies for S.S. and will retire next year. She suggested that if we marry I can save $599.00 p/m. Is that true? Will she get an IRMAA Letter every year too? Will her AGI go up and my AGI go down? Thank you

The 2025 income threshold for IRMAA adjustments will be $106,000 for beneficiaries filing a single return and $212,000 for those filing a joint return. But you EACH must pay the Medicare Part B and Part D premiums — so getting married would not save either of you the basic premium. However, if combining your incomes through marriage results in a joint income below the 2025 limit, it could reduce your IRMAA adjustment in future years.
In your case — with two incomes above the limit — it doesn’t look like this is a good reason for getting married!
