Home Identity Theft Concern – Update

By Terry Savage on December 31, 2022 | Wild Card

Hi Terry,
Thanks so much for your quick response to my home identity theft concern. I have had a busy two weeks following your suggestions.
I had already put a freeze on my credit reports after my father’s identity was stolen in 2021 so I am good there. I did add a 1 year fraud alert with each credit bureau to be extra careful.
I have downloaded all 3 credit reports and reviewed the hard and soft inquiries. The hard inquiries were all legitimate and I am working through the soft inquiries to tie them down. None of them jump out as unusual but sorting through them.
I contacted my mortgage lender to let them know the situation and they have put a note in my file regarding possible property identity theft.
I also called my county recorder’s office (DuPage, IL) and they offer a Property Fraud Alert service (free) that will notify me when any document is recorded against my parcel number. They told me they can’t stop anyone from filing a document but will call me (usually within a few days) so I can take action to check and verify the document. Their research department was very helpful and reviewed the most recent activity on my property and told me I could call any time and they would be happy to check again.
Thanks again for your expertise and guidance in this situation – you are a treasure!
