Ask Terry Questions HSA Contributions & Medicare Part A

HSA Contributions & Medicare Part A

By Terry Savage on October 18, 2025 | Insurance & Annuities

My husband turned 65 this year. He is still employed and covered by his employer’s health insurance plan. He signed up for Part A only in Medicare. He contributes to an HSA account through his employer. Can he continue to contribute until he is no longer insured by his employer? If not, can he withdraw from the Medicare Plan A?

Terry Says

No! This is a tricky situation. He can no longer contribute to the Health Savings Account. He should NOT have signed up for Part A. Ask him to talk to his HR department to refund his contributions now — before he faces a penalty.
