IDES fraud for deceased

By Terry Savage on March 23, 2021 | Credit/Debt

My husband died 5 1/2 years ago. On Friday, he received a letter indicating he had been approved for IDES benefits, a letter from their integrity unit, and the bank card. As a regular WGN listener, I have downloaded your instructions and am following them. I was surprised to see there are still credit reports in his name. No evidence of fraud except for the IDES inquiry, but I am wondering if I can put a freeze on his credit reports. My own are already frozen after one of the credit card data breeches from a few years ago.

OK, this won’t be a problem for you — and you can’t report it to IDES because they stupidly insist in YOUR name and SS number for a fraud report. They’ll figure it out sometime.

I would contact each of the three credit bureaus and report that he is deceased. They may ask for a copy of the death certificate.
As long as your own credit is frozen, you have no liability for fraud in his name. Just make sure that none of the cards on his continuing credit report are the same as yours!!
