IRS — Identity Theft?

By Terry Savage on February 07, 2022 | Wild Card

My daughter tried to file her taxes online last night. It was denied stating that her taxes had already been filed. Immediately thinking identity theft, she got her credit reports, froze her credit and this morning tried to contact the IRS(that was a joke). When she was talking to a friend, her friend said that her mother tried to file and was denied with the statement that she hadn’t filed last year; but the IRS had cashed her check from what she owed them last year. Is there a problem with the IRS online filing?

Please read the response to a question just below this, about creating an IRS “account” — securely. That is the ONLY way to find out if her identity has been stolen. And when that return was filed! Act promptly to open an account and check it out.

If someone really DID steal her identity, there is a long list of things to do. First, and in general, read this article I posted recently. She needs to check her credit reports to see if anyone else has opened credit in her name.

At the same time, if her IRS account shows someone DID use her info to file already, Read THIS PAGE from the IRS website about reporting fraudulent filings.

I really hope it’s a mixup that you can solve with your online account, and not identity theft — That will be quite a hassle!
