Liquidating a coin collectiont
My sister & I inherited a rather large coin collection from our dad. We want to sell off the coins but are not sure how to proceed. Do we trust an auction house or a private collector? Youadvice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A lot depends on where you live, and the potential value of the collection. The real risk is that an unscrupulous person will not let you know that you have a rare and valuable coin — and you’ll never know that happened!
In the Chicago area, I always recommend Harlan J. Berk Ltd at 31 N. Clark.
Or you can find a member of the American Numismatic Association at their website Money.org
It might be worth your time (unless you are planning to sit there while they go through the coins, which is a good idea), to photograph each coin — front and back. Create your own inventory, and let the numismatist know you have done that. That’s better than just counting the total number of coins in the collection.
