Medicare

By Terry Savage on November 05, 2026 | Insurance & Annuities

I retired in May 2026. My spouse will turn 65 in December, she has insurance coverage with get covered Illinois that we will cancel at the end of November. What are our options for coverage for medications as she is on Ozempic for diabetes along with other medications. Can she get a plan to start in December and continue through 2027?
Thank you!

So am I correct in assuming that she will sign up for Medicare at age 65, that she qualifies?
In that case, she should sign up for Part D (at Medicare.gov) and put in her medications in the Part D plan finder to see the least expensive policy. For 2027, the maximum out of pocket is $2400 — but not all drugs are covered. And there is a new deal with GLPs, requiring a doctor’s authorization.

BUT, this is tricky. I don’t know when she will reach age 65 in December. Even if it’s after Open Enrollment, she has a “special” enrollment period for turning 65. But it could be cutting it close to get coverage for 2027. May I suggest you contact www.MedicarePocketProtector.com. They are experts and will make sure there isn’t a gap in coverage because of the timing.
