Medicare: delaying All Parts

By Terry Savage on January 06, 2026 | Insurance & Annuities

Happy 2026 Terry!!

I’m turning 65 in January 2026 and want to delay starting all Parts of Medicare since I continue to work FT and will maintain my high-deductible health coverage and HSA contributions through my large employer.

I’ve sought out guidance from many resources including calling Medicare directly and have been instructed to do “nothing” and not sign up for Part A as I would be penalized having an HSA. Logically, it seems I should at least sign a form to say that I am delaying sign-up. So I made another call to Social Security and was instructed to complete Form CMS 1763 to “terminate” Part A. This form asks for a Medicare # which SS advisor told me to put “NA” since I do not have a number since I haven’t signed up for Medicare (and have not received a Red White Blue card). This guidance doesn’t appear sound either since form only requires my name and Medicare # and no other identifiable information about me.

Could you please advise how I can confirm that NO ACTION is indeed the correct course to take until I discontinue my high-deductible insurance/HSA or turn age 67.

Do NOTHING! As long as you have comparable coverage, and your company does not require it, don’t contact them until you’re ready to retire!
