Medicare enrollment for spouse?
Hi Terry,
We both love your radio shows on WGN!
I am 63 and my wife will be turning 65 next month.
We have a Blue Cross Blue Shield – FED BLUE Health policy through the Department of Veterans affairs. It is a large plan that does not require I get off at age 65. I am the primary policy holder/employee with my wife covered as a spouse. My wife is retired now. Should she sign up for Medicare A? or B?
If she does not sign up, will she be penalized? The plan covers both of us and I plan to work for about four more years.
Additionally, since I am vested, my health plan (upon retirement) would ultimately become our supplemental policy. Lastly, despite working, should I also sign up for Medicare A when I turn 65? Thank you very much!
Terry Says
As long as she is fully covered (and as long as your plan does not require her to sign up — ask them!) then she doesn’t need to sign up. But while you are asking your HR department, make sure that your Veterans benefit will also act as HER supplement, when you both sign up. I’m not sure about that.
Definitely talk to HR and get their answer about your wife’s coverage in writing.
