Ask Terry Questions Medicare for spouse of postal employee

Medicare for spouse of postal employee

By Terry Savage on April 16, 2024 | Insurance & Annuities

Hi Terry, I am 64 on SSDI. My husband is 61 YO retired postal employee. I have been on his insurance, BCBS, since we got married. Do I have to take Medicare at 65? I do not want Medicare as his insurance is much better. I have several health issues and take several prescription drugs. I know that because he is retired I am supposed to take Medicare but I thought the rule was different for Federal employees. I will be 65 in August so I guess I have to make a decision soon. Thank you.

The rules on Medicare for Postal Service employees are complex, and about to change!

I do not begin to think I can offer advice in this situation. Go immediately to the HR department at the postal service to find out YOUR requirements. It’s my understanding from this link that future employees will have to sign up for Part B. But I haven’t seen anything written on spouses. I’m going to leave that to you to figure out. But certainly don’t ignore it. Your question is an important one — and if you must enroll in Part B, then this would be a qualifying event.
