Ask Terry Questions Medicare Open Enrollment

Medicare Open Enrollment

By Terry Savage on October 13, 2026 | Insurance & Annuities

Hi Terry,
I have reviewed your Navigating Medicare articles in the Tribune for the past two Sundays along with a related article
in the 10-11 paper written by Richard Eisenberg. The articles were well written and informative, but here is my issue. It seems to me that most of the recommendations and advice relate to Medicare Advantage Plans, my wife and I have original Medicare. We have Medigap coverage, plan G with BCBS. My wife has part D coverage with BCBS, my part D is with United Healthcare. The premiums for this coverage have significantly increase over the past several years, and we would like to explore other available options for our Part D drug-plan coverage/premiums and our Medigap Part G coverage/premiums. If you have any suggestions or guidance in this regard that would be greatly appreciated. As an aside, I look forward to reading your articles every Sunday as they are always informative and to the point.
Thanks,

Terry Says

Read carefully.
1. You MUST review your Part D coverage EVERY year. Drugs change. Coverage changed. And Part D will likely cost more this year since the government dropped its subsidy. But assuming your drugs are covered, the max out of pocket for next year is $2400. See the reference to HeyMOE.com for help.

2. You don’t generally change your Medigap policy. All charge the same. And all premiums are rising! You’re lucky to have Plan G. It covers everything but your annual deductible.
Switching plans at this point would require medical underwriting.
