Ask Terry Questions Medicare part A

Medicare part A

By Terry Savage on January 28, 2026 | Insurance & Annuities

I will be turning 65 in March and plan on retiring from work in 2 years at age 67 . Currently, I have a Blue Cross PPO that is offered thru my employer and covers my husband and I for a reasonable monthly cost . Do I sign up for Medicare A but only use insurance thru my employer or should I wait closer to my retirement date to enroll . My husband is same age as me and will retire around same time . Is it best to just enroll now and not have to worry about it .

Terry Says

NO! If your work plan does not require it, do not sign up for Part A until you need it. If you do, you can no longer contribute to a Health Savings Account at work, if that is available to you. And it could also impact your spouse’s ability to contribute to his/her own HSA.

Just let it all go until you’re ready to retire — unless your workplace plan requires it, which can happen with some small companies.
