Ask Terry Questions Medicare part A charge

Medicare part A charge

By Terry Savage on March 29, 2026 | Insurance & Annuities

Hi Teri,
My husband was eligible for Medicare under me as he worked for the govt and didn’t contribute. I worked and have the 40 quarters.
He applied for Medicare when he was 65 and I was 59. He paid for Part A since I was not 62. However when I turned 62 he was still charged for Part A. Does he have a refund coming to
Him?
Thank you

According to Medicare: “Non-working spouses can access premium-free Medicare Part A at age 65 if their partner worked at least 10 years and paid Medicare taxes, even without their own employment record.”

However, getting the charges to stop might be a bit difficult. And getting a refund — impossible!
