Medicare part B
Terry, my wife is about to turn 65. She has been sent information about Medicare. She has questions, In particular the part B, and if she has to take it or not, since she is covered by my employers medical insurance. I work for Walmart, and I will be for at least the next 6 years. Also at the time I stop working, will she be eligible for special enrollment with out the penalty?
Thank you!
Terry Says
As long as your wife is fully covered by your employment health insurance, she does not have to sign up for Medicare. And, in fact, if you are contributing to a Health Savings Account, if she signs up you will no longer be able to contribute.
She (and you) will have a special enrollment period upon your retirement. That will be the time to sign up for Medicare and a Supplement, and a Part D drug program. There will be no penalty — but be sure to sign up for the supplement immediately upon qualifying for Medicare.
