Medicare part d needed if on hospice?

By Terry Savage on November 08, 2024 | Insurance & Annuities

Hello Terry, my mom is in hospice with terminal bone marrow cancer. Hospice covers all of her medicine now. Mom has part d Medicare plan with humana, a Medicare supplemental plan with United, and her regular Medicare plan. All plans are fully paid through 2024. Can we cancel Mom’s part d plan? She may not live through 2025….or even another six months. I’m trying to be a good steward of Mom’s finances, as she is paying for private aides and other costs not covered by hospice. I would be grateful for your thoughts on this. Many thanks. Kind regards, Jennifer

Update: Here’s a reply to your specific question from my Medicare expert — Thomas Dillon of JTMedicareSolutions:

Terry, DO NOT let them cancel the Part D Humana Drug plan. No one knows what the future holds.. that’s what insurance is for!

BUT.. since she is receiving all her Meds in a “Professional setting” it will be Part B that pays for her meds..
So.. They might switch drug plans to the Wellcare Valuer $0.00 premium plan. (She keeps a plan; no penalties for loss of coverage and no $$ monthly costs)

That’s what I would suggest.
