Ask Terry Questions Medicare Plans

Medicare Plans

By Terry Savage on April 04, 2026 | Insurance & Annuities

Terry, Here’s some background information. I retired September 19th 2025 at the ago of 67 1/6. I already had Medicare Part A & Part B. I knew I needed to get something else but haven’t yet. My husband went in the hospital 3 days after I retired & died on October 8th. Obviously I was swept up in all the preparations & paperwork dealing with his passing so I put Medicare plans on the back burner. Also, I had vacation days & sick days remaining so I continued to get paychecks until November 14th & Insurance was taken out each month. I then covered a co-worker’s vacation in November & in December & Jan. 1st 2026 & health insurance was again deducted from those paychecks. The last check was for the period ending 1/3/2026. I assumed that it meant my doctor’s appointments through 2/3/2026 would be covered by my Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO. I’m now looking to see what additional plans I need. I heard you on the radio one day mentioning parts D & G. My questions are should I get those 2 or a Medicare supplement plan & will I be penalized for not getting them sooner? My main concern is wanting to stay with my doctors at Northwestern. I mainly see my Primary Care physician once a year, dermatologist once a year, mammogram once a year, colonoscopy every 3 years & neurology once a year. My hearing is fantastic. I see my dentist twice a year for cleanings & my eye doctor once a year. I take 6 prescriptions daily.

Oh no, you made a terrible mistake — and I hope some expert help can let you make the best of it. You have ONLY 6 MONTHS from the time your employment coverage terminates (not including COBRA) to sign up for a Medicare supplement, guaranteed issue (which means low premiums and acceptance regardless of your current health).
