Medicare Small Group Related to Part B
Hi Terry, I think I’ve destroyed my eyes based on the amount of research for a concrete answer. I’m turning 65, I have creditable group coverage, even though we have less than 20 employees, my employer said I can stay on group plan without taking Part A or Part B, my insurance company (the large one here in Chicagoland) and medicare said the same thing, all knowing under 20, and no penalty would be assessed because it’s creditable. However, every broker says you need Part A and Part B because we are a small group, under 20. Insurance company confirmed 3x’s it’s not needed and recommended to call SSA because that isn’t their understanding. I called SSA, the rep escalated this question to their supervisor. Supervisor said I don’t need it and would not be penalized. I asked where I could find this online or if they could send it to me, they didn’t have anything. The said if the insurance company doesn’t require me to be on medicare, then it’s fine. Is this accurate? I’m looking for the truth and trying to do things right, it shouldn’t be this hard. Thank you for your consideration in answering this question. All my research clearly shows I am not alone with this question. Best Regards, Jodi

OK, the rule is that a small business insurer for a company with fewer than 20 employees CAN insist you sign up for Part A. BUT, they don’t have to insist on that! It seems like your insurance company does NOT require Part A.
Let’s not aggravate them any more. BUT, did you get that in writing? If not, just ask for a written confirmation that Part A is not required. And then sleep in peace knowing you have great insurance.
