Ask Terry Questions My credit card was cancelled

My credit card was cancelled

By Terry Savage on March 11, 2023 | Credit/Debt

Hi Terry,

I Love your WGN program with John Williams ! You always give such great advice .

After over 20 years having a major card, I never had an issue, was on time with all payments, and had a good credit rating, they canceled my card. I had been using my debit card to pay my bills for about a year, and just forgot about using this card, when I got the letter. No reason was indicated. I called the company and asked that they reinstate it but they refused. I had asked for a supervisor but was transferred to someone that sounded like they were still in high school.
What is the best way to get a new card and re-establish my credit, as I’m sure this has done a number on my credit rating? Should I stay away from the card that canceled me ? Thanks so much for your help!

It’s a shame your long-held card was canceled, likely for non-use. Check your credit report at www.AnnualCreditReport.com to see if a reason was given. It’s worth knowing.

Then, yes, do apply for a new card. Check them out at CreditCards.com, and get one that accumulates points or miles, or cash back –whatever you value.

Then maybe sign up for Creditkarma.com — it’s free. And they send you regular reports on your credit SCORE.
