I’ve read about so-called “modern monetary theory” which basically says you can “print” all the money you want and it won’t matter. Well, we are going to find out if I’m “dated.” I think the dollar will retain its global role as a financial benchmark only as long as the rest of the world trusts that we aren’t going crazy printing dollars. When or where that point will be reached, only time will tell. But read history. It was once thought that the British pound Sterling would forever be the global benchmark currency. Before that, Spain a few hundred years ago. We are going to find out if the U.S. dollar is the eternal center of global finances — even as we borrow and print!
