new medicare card in mail
I received a new medicare card in the mail with a new number and a letter that says replaces old medicare number. is this real or a scam?

This is not a scam. I suspect it has been a while since you tried to login to your account. It’s been almost two years since Social Security added an extra layer of security beyond your password. Setting that up can require submitting a photo of your driver’s license and a selfie. I have helped some beneficiaries and it isn’t always a smooth process.
You have options for which layer you want to add and we recommend login.gov. It is the government’s system and it seems to be the easiest to navigate. The link explains what it takes to set up an account.
