Original Medicare v. Advantage Plans

By Terry Savage on December 18, 2025 | Insurance & Annuities

Hi Terry-
My husband and I (71 & 67) have Original Medicare and a UHC Supplement. Our total cost per month for the supplement is $500. I love the freedom of being able to see any doctor we wish with no referral needed, no co-pays etc once we have met our deductible. Just pay our $500 month and NO WORRIES! All of my friends, however, are on Advantage plans where they pay NOTHING! They seem content with their coverage, so I question myself on whether I am doing the wrong thing. We can easily afford the $500/month and I love the peace of mind, but should I join Advantage and save my money???? Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you & Happy Holidays!

Your friends haven’t gotten sick yet! They haven’t had to beg for permission to get a recommended MRI. They haven’t had to plead for access to a specialist — or pay a fortune for out-of-network consultations. And they haven’t realized that if they get sick while on vacation in Florida, they will be paying out-of-network fees to see a doc there.

Bottom line: You have none of those worries. I hope your friends stay well.
