pension and social security

By Terry Savage on February 27, 2025 | Social Security

Hi Terry,

I am a retired teacher (65 years old) collecting an Illinois pension. I have not applied for Social Security and I don’t plan on taking it until I am 70 years old. Now that the Social Security Fairness Act of 2025 is in play, do I need to sign up for social security or should I wait til I’m closer to 70?
Thank you so much.

Terry Says

You can wait til you’re 70. You’ll get the max benefit at that age, with no WEP reduction— assuming you have the required 40 quarters of covered earnings.
