Ask Terry Questions PUBLIC SERVANT FAIRNESS BILL

PUBLIC SERVANT FAIRNESS BILL

By Terry Savage on January 06, 2024 | Wild Card

My husband worked for CPS and retired early and got another job which qualified him for social security. Because he worked as a public servance his social security was reduced to 40%(windfall elimination act). I hear there is a bill in congress to eliminate WEP, yet it doesn’t appear to get voted on. Is there anyone I can write to find out why? This effects so many people teachers, firemen, policmen etc. Why should we be penalized, many people have pensions and are collecting social security without a penalty. If I die, he can’t even collect my social security even though its higher then his. Thanks

Yes, there is a bill in Congress to remove this WEP — Windfall Elimination Penalty — designed so “public servants” don’t get a double benefit. Notably if you worked in a SS covered job for 30 years, you are not subject to the WEP.

Here’s a link to the latest news on that bill — but be warned that NOTHING is getting through Congress these days!
