Recent college graduate filling out forms to payback student loans

Where should we look for how to fill out the online questions for my son to repay his college loans… about $27,000. He does not currently have a job & BOY has this process changed since our daughter graduated 5 years ago!! Not sure what kind of re-payment options are available to us. He attended SIU in IL, graduating 12-13-14.

Terry Says: I think the best place to start is www.Finaid.org.  They have all the information on student loan repayment, including the programs such as deferment and Income Based Repayment plans.  Here’s a link to that specific section on the site:  http://www.finaid.org/loans/repayment.phtml

You also mention loans, in plural.  Some you might want to consolidate, and others you don’t — depending on whether they are all Federal student loans, and which type.  You won’t get much of a deal on private student loans, or on parental PLUS loans.  And keep in mind that deferring loans or getting a lower payment deal doesn’t defer the interest buildup!  It can add thousands to the repayment schedule, so try to get the loans paid off within 10 years.
