Retiring at 78 employer subsided Cobra offered

By Terry Savage on August 01, 2025 | Insurance & Annuities

My wife is 78 and has received an offer to retire with same as employed, subsidized cobra for six months. We currently have only Medicare plan A. The current company plan is health, dental, drugs and eyecare.
Is it wise to use the subsidized cobra for six months and then sign up for Medicare Plans B and D and the other coverages needed? Any tips and traps appreciated!

Terry Says

No, no, no! Sign up for Medicare Part B and a SUPPLEMENT immediately before retirement, to start the month she retires.

There is only a 6-month window when she has guaranteed acceptance into Supplement G — the most comprehensive. Don’t miss that deadline!
And be sure she signs up for Part D, as well.

She can do it all at Medicare.gov.
