Ask Terry Questions Roth IRA/student loan

Roth IRA/student loan

By Terry Savage on August 06, 2022 | College Savings / Student Loans

Hi Terry, I am retired collecting social security and a pension. Would it be a good idea to withdraw from my Roth IRA to pay down a Parent Plus student loan while there is no interest? Thank you.

Terry Says

You will know if there are any “deals’ offered within a few weeks, since studentloan interest payments are scheduled to resume on September 1st. It’s a warning to others that you are retired — and still paying on your parent student loans! Depending on your total liquidity and assets, I would agree that it’s time to pay off the balance on that student loan when payments resume.
