Ask Terry Questions savings for grandchild

savings for grandchild

By Terry Savage on January 29, 2026 | College Savings / Student Loans

When she was born, we started a Bright Start account for our granddaughter. This summer our daughter will marry a man who has a daughter with autism with high support needs. In an effort to support both granddaughters in the future, what type of savings/investment account might we open for our new granddaughter on the autism spectrum?

Terry Says

How lovely of you to include your new step-granddaughter in your plans. There is no reason not to open a separate 529 plan for her. Many children with autism go on to college, and become very high-achieving. If time shows that is not her route, the money in her 529 plan can be shared with her step-sister without penalty. And at that point, you can decide how to provide additional help.
