Ask Terry Questions Series EE savings bonds

Series EE savings bonds

By Terry Savage on August 27, 2026 | Chicken Money

I have 35 EE savings bonds that are not generating interest anymore. The total value is 4881.32; if I cashed them in the interest would be $3631.32, that would all be taxable, right. Should I cash a few at a time so I don’t have to claim that much interest or what else can I do with them? I have several more bonds that are still generating interest; should I cash them in as they mature?

Terry Says

If they have stopped earning you must cash them in, and pay taxes on the gains. But you’ll have the money!
