Ask Terry Questions Social security and IRMAA

Social security and IRMAA

By Terry Savage on August 02, 2024 | Insurance & Annuities

Is the IRMAA deduction applied to both spouses (married filing jointly)? My income has been listed as $0 for the past 15 years. My initial social security benefit was higher, but the next month I received a letter telling me that IRMAA would be applied. All of our income is in my husband’s pension (only in his name) and our investment income.

Then, just two months later, I received another letter that restored by benefit back to the original amount, with nothing deducted for Medicare. Will Social Security be coming after me for the back IRMAA amounts? I have been receiving the higher benefit amount for the past year.

Terry Says

IRMAA is based on the Modified Adjusted Gross Income on your tax return. But the IRMAA limits are adjusted upward for married filing jointly, so it shouldn’t make a difference which way you file.

And make sure your Medicare Part B premiums are being deducted from your Social Security payment, or from your checking account.
