Social security, disability and getting stimulus

By Terry Savage on February 15, 2021 | Wild Card

Hello Terry,

I have a question about my dad. He never received his stimulus check. Not the first or second one. My dad has not worked in a few years and has been collecting social security and disability, so I am not sure if he even qualifies because he does not file a tax return anymore since he hasn’t worked. But, I heard of other people also in my fathers situation and they received their stimulus. Do you know if he can be eligible? Can he file a return for 2020 to collect his stimulus?

Thank you!

Terry Says

He MUST file a 2020 return — even if he doesn’t earn enough to be required to file. Then he can claim BOTH stimulus checks on Line 30. Just be sure YOU do NOT claim him as a dependent.
