Ask Terry Questions Social Security Earnings Record

Social Security Earnings Record

By Terry Savage on October 14, 2025 | Social Security

I had wages through 2008.. nothing after….in review of my “Earnings Record”, I noticed that under Work Year… 2023, there was 160,200 as Taxed SS Earnings……as I have not had any additional wages, is there a scam going on? should I be concerned? I am 83 years old.

Terry Says

Yes, you should be concerned — although it is likely just a filing error that will hurt the person who really worked! It can’t impact you.

But you should check into your credit report — to make sure this wasn’t part of someone using your SS number to take out loans. Read this for instructions on getting your FREE credit report — AND, perhaps you should freeze your credit (as described in this article):

How did you find out about this “extra” income in your SS records? I assume you have a “MySocialSecurity” account.
It’s so tough to get through to SS these days. But I believe you can report this discrepance online through your MSS account. Give it a try.
