Social security overpayment notice

By Terry Savage on June 05, 2023 | Wild Card

I recd a note on my social security online account saying I was overpaid by $132.10. I am not even collecting social security. My first husband passed away in 1995 and my children recd social security from him. Why are they saying I owe them money back?

This could be either a typical SS mistake— OR it could have serious consequences for you when you DO take Social Security in the future. I suggest continuing to contact Social Security to ask for a written explanation. Keep track of the dates, times and if you can get an employee name or personnel number — of everyone you talk to.

I have written about stories where — years later — children’s benefits as minors are being clawed back from them — but NOT from a former spouse. However, if you find out that is the case, PLEASE write back to me with details. We are collecting these ‘horror stories’ and trying to get help. But you need to do the research to give us the specifics.

At the same time, create your own “My Social Security” account at www.ssa.gov. Make sure your earnings contributions are being recorded correctly, so you don’t have a problem in the future.
