Social Security Survivor Benefits
Hi Terry,
I am 61 years old. I am not working, and currently receiving a public pension. My husband passed away at age 54 and I am eligible for spouse survivor benefits. My husband social security benefits are higher than mine. I was told by social security representative survivor benefits at age 67 is the maximum does not grow to age 70. Should I claim survivor benefits now at age 61 for lifetime or delay until FRA 67? The difference is $303 month.
Terry Says
Don’t confuse “survivor benefits” with “spousal benefits.”
You are entitled to reduced survivor benefits at age 60 if you are a widow (and perhaps benefits for minor children if you have them).
But those benefits are reduced if you take them before your full retirement age — 67.
So it all depends on how desperate you are to have the income now.
