social security; wife to get one-half of husband’s benefit (not deceased)

By Terry Savage on February 10, 2025 | Social Security

Hi, Terry. Here’s a quick social security question.

We’ve been advised to have my wife plan to start taking Social Security when she reaches Full Retirement Age. What do you think?

Here’s the background information:

 – We are both retired. I’m two years older than my wife.
 – I reached Full Retirement Age on Jan 2, 2023 at 66 years and 4 months old.
 – My wife will reach Full Retirement Age on May 7, 2025 at 66 years and 8 months old.
 – My social security benefits are a higher dollar amount than my wife’s.
 – I plan on taking social security when I turn 70, on Sep 2, 2026.
 – My wife plans on taking social security when she reaches her Full Retirement Age on May 7, 2025. Rather than take her benefit amount, she is entitled to take one-half of the benefit amount associated with the benefit that was available to me at my Full Retirement Age (which, according to the calculator on the social security website, is a higher dollar amount than she would receive if she took her benefit amount).

Just wanted to run this by you as we are diving into the interaction with the social security administration to get my wife started on the process to start receiving her benefit in May. Again, does it seem like we’re on the right track, for my wife to start taking her benefit in May this year?

Thank you, Terry!
