Sons personal information

By Terry Savage on December 22, 2021 | Credit/Debt

My son has his personal information shared in a data breech through his work.
SS# , name, and address, have been possibly threatened.
I’m taking the free credit monitoring for the year , he is attending College but has no credit cards opened in his name , but we were looking to open a card with limited credit so he can start building his own . Looking to see what you would recomend for him.
Thank you

The first thing to do is to check his credit report at all three bureaus. Even though HE didn’t open any credit in his name, it’s worth checking to see if someone else used his info to open credit. What you’re hoping to see at each bureau is NOTHING!!
Use this link to get to all three bureaus to do the check. The report should be free and no need to sign up for credit monitoring services. Go to www.AnnualCreditReport.com to get linked to the three bureaus. (Actually, just do one for a start, and if there is nothing there he is probably clear.
If there is something, contact both the credit bureau AND the lender reporting the info immediately.

Then, when you’ve solved that problem, get him a “secured card” in his own name and SS number. He gets a VISA that is secured by a savings account in the issuing bank. Tell him to use it for small purchases every month Pay in full and on time. That will build a strong credit report. Here’s a link to search for secured cards.
And after that gets going, he might want to temporarily freeze his credit — but not before he gets the secured card.
