Spousal social security

By Terry Savage on June 12, 2025 | Social Security

You mentioned that a wife can collect 1/2 of her husband’s social security amount after age 62. I’m hearing differently. If this is true, does that apply if the wife is still working part time? My husband will be 66 and 10 months in December. I will not be of retirement age till March of 2027. Would I collect my own ss, or keep half of his whichever is higher?
Thank you in advance.

There would be absolutely no reason to collect SS before your full retirement age, because you will receive reduced benefits — and because it will impact your own benefit at FRA. Read this from SS:

If you are still working, you should wait until at least your full retirement age to collect any benefits. Your benefit will likely be larger than half of his!
