Ask Terry Questions Spouses Social Security

Spouses Social Security

By Terry Savage on August 14, 2025 | Social Security

I turn 65 this November and I do not plan to retire yet, I also have health insurance for my wife and I through my job. My wife turns 65 and does not work currently, she has not worked since Covid started. She will turn 65 in February. The question is as follows…… Should she apply for Social Security? She does not plan on going to work again.

Terry Says

No. She should not apply early for her SS — unless you absolutely need the money. Claiming for her benefit now will reduce her base benefit by 85 a year — a big mistake!
