Ask Terry Questions SS Fairness Act

SS Fairness Act

By Terry Savage on January 20, 2026 | Social Security

My wife spent time as a police officer in Toledo and Sylvania Township where her income did not provide social security benefits which makes her monthly check very low. Does the fairness act allow her to add those years to her SS earnings? Trying to get exact amount of earnings is very hard since it was back in the 1980’s. SS does have the amount she earned at the township but does not give her credit for that money. We follow your column in the Toledo Blade and really enjoy your advice. Hopefully you can assist us with this as the SS department just keeps ignoring us. Thank you for your time.

Terry Says

No, the recent Fairness Act has nothing to do with adding money to checks for income on which money was not originally contributed.
It only stops the reduction of earned benefits for those who also received public employee pension benefits.
