SSA clawback overpayment letter

By Terry Savage on May 15, 2023 | Wild Card

Per your March 5, 2023 newpaper article, Social Security Horror Stories, I received a letter from SSA that I was overpaid due to a pension offset for eight months SSA admitted the error is theirs. I have been told to repay the overpayments within 30 days. The SSA letter said the overpayment was known in 2022 but was suspended due to the Covid19 national emergency. I have the option to appeal if repaying the amount due will cause a financial hardship.

Terry Says

You definitely should appeal. If it was only 8 months of overpayment, be thankful they caught their mistake early. For many people, it is a substantial amount, accumulated over years because of SS mistakes!

We are soliciting those Social Security Horror Stories in order to gather them and present them to Congress. If you’re reading this response and have a horror story please email it to me at Terry@TerrySavage.com.

But in this case (sorry to say, and I mean that), your story isn’t quite “horrible” enough!
