Ask Terry Questions SSI Disability and Medicare part A

SSI Disability and Medicare part A

By Terry Savage on November 09, 2025 | Insurance & Annuities

Hello Terry, you’re the best. I am 62. Four years ago I qualified for SSI disability and was subsequently automatically enrolled in Medicare part A (I could not decline). I have full medical and drug coverage through my wife’s large employer plan (Blue Cross PPO). Will I have any problems signing up for Medicare parts B and D when I turn 65. Thank you.

Terry Says

No, your SSDI will automatically convert to full SS benefits at age 67– your full retirement age. And if you are still covered by your wife’s work insurance, you will not have to sign up for Medicare Parts B and D at age 65 — unless her company plan requires it.
