Ask Terry Questions SSI survivor benefits

SSI survivor benefits

By Terry Savage on August 31, 2026 | Social Security

If were to die tomorrow (receiving 2X my wife’s SSI check), I understand she can still get my check by going to the local SSI office and requesting it. Hard to believe it could be that simple, is it really that uncomplicated? What documents would be required?

Terry Says

She has to apply at a SS office for survivor’s benefits. If you were married at your death, she is entitled to the LARGER of your check or hers — not both! She would need a death certificate, and proof of marriage to apply.
