Stimulus Check for dependent in 2018, not 2019
Hi Terry,
My step son lived with me in 2018 while he was attending college as a full time student. He filed his 2018 taxes and I filed mine and I claimed him as a dependent for 2018. He has since moved on and is on his own and we both filed our 2019 taxes after the stimulus checks were issued. In 2019 no one claimed him as a dependent. I received my $1200 stimulus, he has not received anything….Yet. Will he get a stimulus check or get a tax credit when he files his 2019 taxes? or is he out of luck because I claimed him as a dependent in 2018?
Terry Says
Yep — he won’t get a stimulus check because they saw him as a dependent on your 2019 return! However, if he files a tax return for 2020 next April, he can try to claim a credit because he wasn’t a dependent on your 2019 return! I have no idea if the IRS is going to accept this argument and make a payment. So unless we hear differently, it will be worth a try!!
