Student Loan — bankruptcy?

By Terry Savage on August 14, 2025 | College Savings / Student Loans

Mrs. Savage, can I currently file bankruptcy including my student loans if I am currently what I feel is hardship? I have been unemployed for 4 yrs bc I am my mother’s primary caretaker for which I do not receive any money. I do not receive ANY gov assistance. My only assets is my car and my small retirement of 2400 dollars. No money in savings or checking over 100 dollars. Would I be a good candidate for bankruptcy?

Terry Says

There is a possibility that you could have those student loans dismissed because of hardship.
Read this article that explains the process:

And then I’m going to suggest you make one call — and it won’t cost you anything. Contact the National Foundation for Credit Counseling at 800-388-2227. They are a non-profit with counselors you can trust to help you deal with this situation.
And they might also be able to point you to some government programs that could help you get payments for caring for your mother under Medicaid!

Please do write back and let me know what happens. You’re doing a great thing for your mother, and there should be a way for you to climb out of this deep hole.
