Ask Terry Questions student loan debt

student loan debt

By Terry Savage on November 13, 2019 | College Savings / Student Loans

How can you consolidate a student loan when you do not have a co-signer. My daughter has been trying but she always gets the same response. I was a co-signer for her when the loans were originally applied for but, have recently gone through a divorce so I can’t help her. I hope you have a suggestion for her. Thank you

Big question: why does she want to “consolidate” her student loans? Are you saying she wants to “refinance” her student loans? If that’s the case, and if she has good credit and a job with reliable income, she should go to www.SoFi.com and she may be able to refinance and consolidate all her loans into one loan with a lower rate. However, if she does this with Federal student loans, she loses some privileges like “income based repayment” or hardship deferrals. So she needs to understand all the consequences of a refi consolidation — assuming she would qualify.
