Ask Terry Questions student loan forgiveness public service income based payment.

student loan forgiveness public service income based payment.

Hi Terry,
My son is working in a public service job and is in the income based payment plan until the time period for his service is complete to forgive student loans. If he gets married prior to the 10 year
service does the income of a spouse effect the payment or is it only based on his income? Thank you for your time.

Terry Says

The actual public service loan forgiveness program does not depend on income levels — only on meeting the qualifications for an appropriate employer and time of employment. Read details here: https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service

BUT, most people who apply for PSLF plans are also repaying their loans under one of several income driven repayment plans.
(see details here: https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/repayment/plans/income-driven)

If he marries someone with a high income, and hasn’t yet started an income-based plan, joint income would impact the amount of monthly payments. So make sure he sets up his repayment plan and applies for PSLF before he marries!
