Student loan forgiveness …..

By Terry Savage on April 02, 2021 | College Savings / Student Loans

Hello! I have been paying the Federal parent/student loan for approximately 7 years. My daughter paid her student loan off already. Our deal was she pay hers & myself & my ex-husband would pay this loan. Well, he paid 1 time – anyways, this loan payment right now is of course suspended. I have made a few payments while suspension is on. My question is: Am I entitled for forgiveness?? (Also, the payments go up every year!) Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time

There is no new forgiveness program for this loan at this time. And it’s likely that only Federal student loans made to students will be included–but we will have to see what the new Administration does. You are wise to make additional payments now, because it all goes to principal.
As for your ex, you could consider going to court — or threatening to — if he does not live up to your agreement — assuming it was a written agreement. Remind him that his grandchildren will know about this one day! But if it’s not part of your deal, you don’t have much leverage over him.
Not sure exactly which loan you are paying– Federal student loan, parental PLUS loan, or private student loan. But if you can refi your house to pay it off the rate will surely be lower.
