Tarriffs
Your article this morning on the effects of a tariff war was excellent and it truly helped my understanding. The problem is that I read all the hoopla about Trump tariffs (threats) and I don’t know what to make of it…..until today, thank you. Allow me to ask one more question to abate my confusion; Trump imposed (and threatened to impose) tariffs in his first administration and I believe we had a great economy under him, what am I missing?

China retaliated with huge tariffs on soybeans, and our farmers suffered. Exports dropped 87%. And the administration spent $28 billion in support for farmers.
Meanwhile, Brazil took over many of our exports markets, and farmers lost out in the long run.
The burden of tariffs shows up eventually — and rarely offsets the money collected.
