Ask Terry Questions Unclaimed Property

Unclaimed Property

By Terry Savage on November 28, 2022 | Wild Card

My husband is the beneficiary for his Father’s trust. His father has been deceased for over 20 years. Long story short, despite bringing trust documents to the bank in July 2022, we missed a dormant notice in August, 2022 and the account was turned over to the state. It does not show up in the unclaimed property list. How do we find it and retrieve it?

Terry Says

That depends on the state to which the property was escheated. It will take a few months for it to go through the system and become available on the lists of unclaimed property. Here’s a link to an article I wrote about that very situation a few years back!

You should send a registered letter to the State Treasurer, with all the details and include the ways you can be contacted to get this money back. Most state treasurers issue a list every year of “unclaimed property” –but again, it could take a while to get on the list. Contact the bank or brokerage firm that issued the dormant notice and see if they can help you figure out where it went and when. All of that will be useful in your letter to the state treasurer.
